For my seventy-third birthday,
our five grandchildren, all boys,
marched up the stairs to our studio
apartment above one daughter’s garage
with an all-natural mix, farmers market eggs,
canola oil + organic milk in hand, the eldest lugging
my just passed daddy’s waffle maker for us to deploy
as always when here in L.A. although if truth be known
I do seem to prefer employing new-fangled iron versions
that occupy places of honor in each of the other family homes.
Sushi appetizers added to the traditional fare because we love it,
our room’s little frig is chocked full of fixings for tonight’s feast
before tomorrow’s Jewish New Year, which includes two big bowls
of bread batter that will be kneaded, twisted then baked into neurotic challahs.
On the walls my wife has placed three lovely paintings of little girls’ pretty frocks
since at least as of now, oy, we don’t have a hint of any of these on pregnancy horizons.
